Creative Signal Strength: The Missing Driver of Ad Performance

This billboard disrupted a $29bn fashion empire.

Without a single word.

Credit to Emanuele Morelli, who created this.

At first glance, it looks like any fashion ad.
Until you look closer.

The model's dress is made of textile waste pouring into a mountain of thrown-away clothes.

It uses the language of advertising against itself.

Morelli used the same design principles that make ads effective:

1️⃣ High contrast
↳ The image pops. Your eye goes straight to the model.

2️⃣ Strong focal point
↳ Clear subject. No confusion about where to look first.

3️⃣ Strategic imagery
↳ It stops you the same way a fashion ad would. Then forces you to reconsider what you're seeing.

That's what great creative does.
It creates a moment of recognition, then shifts it.

That's how creative signals work.

The visual language you use determines whether someone stops, processes, or keeps scrolling.

Most brands think more creative solves the problem.
But the brands that scale profitably focus on contrast, composition, and signal strength.

The fundamentals that make people pause.

Signal strength drives creative performance.

This single image shifted perception more than a hundred forgettable ads could.

Because it used the language of advertising with precision.

So, before you produce your next 50 ad variations, ask:

Does the visual stop the scroll?
High contrast. Clear focal point. Strategic composition.

Does the image communicate before they read a word?
If you removed all copy, would the visual still tell a story?
Are you testing creative volume or creative signal strength?

More ads won't fix weak composition.

At Fluency, we test composition, contrast, and hierarchy before we scale volume.

Because signal strength scales. Volume doesn't.

Creative isn't the problem.

How you use its power is what matters.
