The AI shopper doesn’t browse. It queries.

By 2028, 30% of web browsing will happen without a human.

Most DTC product catalogs aren't ready for this.

There's a signal problem most DTC brands don't see yet.

AI shopping agents like Amazon, OpenAI, and Perplexity are already here.

The customer's first interaction with your brand is not an ad, a landing page, or a search result.

It's an agent recommendation that's working entirely from your product data.

Most DTC product catalogs were built for keyword search.

They favor short descriptions, SEO-optimized copy, and emotive language:

- "Perfect for cozy fall nights."
- "Effortlessly chic."
- "The only bag you'll ever need."

An AI agent cannot work with that.
It needs structured, specific, machine-readable attributes.

It asks for material, fit, temperature range, use case, occasion and constraints.

This is the kind of data that tells a system exactly what a product is,
And when it belongs in a recommendation.

If your catalog isn't built that way, the agent skips you.
Because your data isn't readable.

This is the same problem I see inside brand analytics every week.

Brands have dashboards full of data, such as "revenue is down 4% week over week".

But none of that makes a difference until someone turns it into a signal.
It's essential to know what happened, why it happened, and what to do about it.

The product catalog problem is identical.

A description is data.
A structured, specific, machine-readable attribute set is a signal.
One tells a human how to feel, while the other tells a system what to do.

The brands that win are the ones whose data is structured well enough to become a signal the agent can act on.

You can implement this today.

We talk about signals all the time in analytics.
This is the same principle, just extended to your catalog.

Data doesn't move anything until it's structured to drive a decision.
That's still true; the decision-maker just changed.

How structured is your product data today?
Is it built for humans, machines, or somewhere in between?
