Marketing Decision Making: Trust the Experts You Hire

Marketing has a problem that no other function has...

Everyone thinks they can do it.

Nobody overrules the CFO on the forecast.
Nobody redlines the lawyer's contract.
Nobody rewrites the engineer's code.

But the marketing?
Everyone has feedback.
Everyone is a marketer.

I've watched it happen at every brand I've worked inside.

You hire a senior marketer for their judgment.
You pay them what that judgment costs.

Then the work goes up the chain, and the notes come back.

→ "Can we add one more line about the offer?"
→ "The logo needs to be way bigger."
→ "I don't love the color."
→ "Let's play it safe."

Even though the feedback might feel like nothing.
Each one pulls the work further from the version that would have performed.

And the reason this keeps happening is so simple:

Everyone has watched ads their whole life.
So, watching marketing feels like understanding it.

But seeing 10,000 campaigns makes you an audience; it doesn't make you a strategist.

And the person giving the note carries none of the risk if the campaign underperforms.

The marketer does.

If you hired someone senior, you hired them for their read on the work.
Override the read enough times, and you've paid a senior salary for junior execution.

Give the call to the person who owns the outcome.

That's what you hired them for.

And that's what scales a brand.
